Mystiques (Mystics)

2021

With this series, Nicolas Maureau revisits the figure of the saint through its inner, human dimension. The mystics, between ecstasy and solitude, seek a direct link with the divine, outside dogma. The backgrounds, left white, heighten the spiritual tension of the figures: isolated, full-length, absorbed in a silent presence. These mystics carry their beyond within the image, towards a world visible to them alone.

Freed from the epithet saint, the titles are simple first names. These characters, embodied by young models, are beings in the making: neither fully saints nor quite ordinary. Mystiques shows the uncertainty of a humanity in search of elevation, inhabited by doubt and faith.
