With Scènes de genre, Nicolas Maureau revisits the codes of genre painting, introducing a contemporary reading of identities. By inverting gendered roles in scenes inspired by famous works, he reveals how cultural norms are assigned. Male figures take on gestures once deemed feminine, while women adopt postures of power or resistance. This displacement brings out the persistence of collective narratives we believe outdated, but which continue to shape our imaginations.

They resurface, stammer, return in other forms. It is this troubled return, this active memory of the visible, that the series gives us to consider.
